i'm not a racist
let me just get that out of the way first before i'm called one
most foreigners i've met in taiwan have been pretty cool and nice people
i'd say 99 out of 100 foreigners in taiwan are pretty cool and nice people
it's unfortunate we ran into that 1 that's just a total ass and an arrogant moron
we were out drinking a few days ago and the table next to us were a bunch of english speaking folks which included this austin powers look-alike old british guy
he seemed pretty grumpy and moody and kept giving our group funny looks
was it because we are a bunch of "taike" and were speaking taiwanese
for whatever's worth, their table was the loudest in the whole place... we were nowhere near their uproar
anyways, one thing led to another as i was walking by their table going back to my seat, austin powers ended up standing right in front of me and we were looking at each other
i gave him a nod and said "hey, how's it going dude?"
his response in a very heavy british accent and loud voice "I'M NOT A DUDE!" (so, are you a bitch then?)
he then quickly turned around and took a seat at his table, so i just ignored him and went back to my seat
a few seconds later, i looked towards austin powers and he was just throwing a fit and berating to his group "I'M NOT A DUDE!", then followed by "WHAT THE FUCK!?" and mimicking me in a chinese accent "how's it going duuuude?" and going on and on about being called a dude
ok there DUDE
i wanted to confront him but we were having a good time and really why let some loser ruin the night for us?
yea, you are really cool and above all of us because you speak english?
yea, well... i do too... so???
go eat a spotted dick and choke on it

yeah, go back his fcuking country , dude!?!
That's terrible. He sounds like a complete dickhead. There's no excuse for this kind of behavior, other than complete ignorance.
I'm sorry to hear about this because it's these sort of people who give the rest of us a bad name.
Growing up in Canada I've watched White people make fun of Asians all my life but to have a White guy make fun of Asians in an Asian country is just too much...I think I would've gone up to him(A.P.) and said 'one more crack from you and I'll call my triad friends and we'll kick your arse back to your lame soccer playing country'.

taimei, that's uncalled for... but then so were his actions.
carrie, yea it was unfortunate we had to meet such an asshole... as i said though, most of the expats i've met in taiwan have been pretty cool folks.
jeanne, i hear ya. i too grew up in canada, so i've seen my share of racism. in fact, i studied elementary school in costa rica and i was the only asian in the entire school and almost everywhere i went, so believe me, i've had my share of racist remarks thrown at me and people just making fun of me (making kung-fu fighting sounds or saying "ching chong ching") out of the blue. that was some 20+ years ago in a third world country though... but to happen nowadays in MY OWN country, yea, it's pretty fucked up and disturbing.
Not bashing all foreigners in Taiwan but some are allowed to get away with too much because many Taiwanese as well as some foreigners themselves have a mentality that the West (and Japan) is better than us. Not good.
However, looks like you were sensible in this situation not to pick a fight. People like that are probably too far gone to learn a good lesson. :)

p.s. power to the taike!
Racism is pervasive everywhere. We have to steel ourselves against it and try to work above it -- both in its institutionalized form and when in bubbles up from frustrated, dysfunctional individuals like Austin Powers or former Virginia Senator, George Allen.
It might be of interest to readers of this blog -- some sort of karma for the "evils of the white man"? -- but I am often confronted with Taiwanese and Chinese (especially kids) who make fun of me as a white guy and of my accented Mandarin. Again, racism is pervasive among all humans...
amy... yes, foreigners in taiwan are put in a pedestal at times and get away with a lot of stuff, but they are still discriminated against. none of this should affect us as we simply just have to be ourselves and do our own things our own way. it'd be nice to a foreigner when you get pulled over by the cops here tho'.
boyd... ain't that the truth! i've always said, chinese and taiwanese people are some of the most racist folks i've ever seen! it might not be so obvious in the open, but behind closed doors, some of the shit that's being said, especially by the older folks, is pretty bad.
unfortunately, "asshole" is not a race. i wish it were because whenever one is seen to approach, i could avoid it. truth is you never know one until is becomes manifest.
"dude" is one thing that i haven't been called in Taiwan. i would actually prefer that to the normal comments.
michael... if "asshole" was a race, forget china's population, they'd easily take over this world.
after that little incident, i'm actually pretty hesitant to call a foreigner "dude". i think i'll just mind my own business and stop greeting foreigners for a while.
Andres, that guy has a problem. trust me, us foreigners would welcome a straightforward greeting such as from you. one problem that i have in my neighborhood is that the first time people see me in the local Thai place, they instantly become retarded, yelling stuff at me and informing the boss lady that she had better run out of the kitchen and see what's up with the laowai. it's now become a joke with the boss lady, where she will come out of the kitchen and say stuff like "this is your first time here? don't bother me about him - he's here everyday and is my best customer!" lol if someone said "hey dude" i would prolly faint! lol
michael... HEY DUDE, a big reason that i greet and like talking to foreigners in taiwan i see is because i speak pretty good (at least i think so) english. no, i'm not trying to show off or anything, but my thinking is this... if i was in some country where i was the minority, i'd be glad if someone would be able to conversate to me in my own language. some foreigners might take it the wrong way and/or probably think i have a hidden agenda or something, but really... i'm just trying to be helpful and friendly.
by the way, i went to a local thai joint a few years ago with some thai workers from our factory and let me tell you this... it was fun! unfortunately, we had some locals there that for reasons unknown didn't like us being there. called me to their table and bought me a drink and started talking all this tough shit about how they associated with gangsters and shit... i guess we "invaded" their turf or some shit. whatever, i'm just there to have fun.
