things i missed during olivia's first month

during my recent business trip to china, not only did i miss christmas with olivia, but i also missed winter solstice festival (dongzhi festival), olivia's first haircut and her 1 month birthday on 12/26

i'm not too piqued about the winter solstice festival but i'm kinda upset about missing first haircut and her 1 month birthday

the first haircut is an event which happens on the 24th day of birth and it symbolizes filial obedience and devotion for one's parents

the 1 month birthday is also important to us chinese as it ends the mother's postpartum confinement ("the month") and since karen was doing her month at her mom's house, the end of the month meant olivia was coming back home

the 1 month birthday is also a big celebration and a gift (usually cake or sticky rice) is given to family and friends; and some even hold a big party to celebrate this event (no, we didn't)

with the new year upon us, here's to hoping i don't miss many more milestones in olivia's life

here are some photos taken and emailed to me by karen a few days before olivia's 1 month birthday while i was away

Bummer on missing those milestones Andres. Those pics are adorable! Out of curiosity, how much longer do you have to do those visa runs?

todd... yeah, it sucked being away for so long. she grew up so much in the two weeks i was gone too. i believe until i'm 36... not too sure tho'. it keeps changing, so i'll have to double check soon.

mj... we hope to come to out to hukou soon. haven't had any bbq in a long time!

I didn't know those facts about the first month. I'd better make sure my wife is clued about about that.

hi neil, i'm sure your wife's family will guide you guys through these things. i don't even know a lot about all these traditions, customs and superstitions. there's just too many to follow and it simply confines your life and kinda makes the time with your new baby unenjoyable. just do what you can to satisfy the elders i guess, but at the end of the day you do what you feel is right and what you want... after all, it is your kid, not theirs.

Andres,

I've tried to leave a comment several times on this post and none of them went through. I hope you don't think I'm neglecting you!

I had no idea these firsts were so important in Taiwan and I'm sorry you missed them. However.....there's always baby's first steps, baby's first words and baby's first date waiting just around the corner. Ha ha!

I hope you don't miss another second with your precious wee one!
