when i left for work on monday morning, olivia looked like this...
then when i got home from work that night, olivia looked like this...
yup, olivia got her head shaved. karen and my mom did it while i was at work without telling me! well, i don't wanna get into that. that's another post for another time but she does look very cute. we've got ourselves a little shaolin monk!
here's how it went down...
the reason for shaving her hair is because according to "people" (the elders), the hair will grow back more evenly, thicker and fuller; which is complete bullshit to me. i have friends who shaved their kids and their hair still looks like ralph from the simpsons. on the same token, i have friends who never shaved their kids and they've got so much hair it would make a heavy metal band jealous. what does that tell you? it's all in the genes. you be the judge.
you don't have to shave it off if you don't want to and i didn't want to, but since i was not home, there wasn't anything i could do about it. oh well, it is what it is and she does look really cute...

wouldn't it suck if her hair took forever to grow back tho'?!?!?! know where i can find some baby wigs??? :P

her eyebrows are gone too!
tell Karen that Olivia looks too much like this guy now:

but she sure is cute no matter what!
They do the same thing in South America, or at least Bolivia but they wait until age 2 - 4. I couldn't figure out at first if there were a bunch of little girls with cancer or a bunch of little boys who liked to wear dresses.
The reason they do it is similar but they also believe that if the girl has curly hair (an undesirable trait) that the hair will grow back in straight.
mj... yup, the eyebrows are gone too! oh man, why did you have to show me that picture? now, when i look at olivia, i got this guy's face on my mind!
cat... funny that you should say that. i was actually thinking about naming this post "bolivia"... get it, bald + olivia = bolivia!
I agree with you Andres, a bizarre custom. There's no sense in arguing with mom and the wife, you'll lose every time...lol.
Great photos.
Mmmm. I had the same issue a week ago. My wife wanted to cut all of Alice's hair off when she was 49 days old 'because the fortune teller said it had to be done'. Thankfully I won that arguement, she has got lovely hair, it would be a shame to lose it.
We can get away with no comforming with the more bizarre customs as she is only half Taiwanese.
oh, Neil, you hit a sore spot with me: fortune tellers. how people can follow that crackpot advice and actually take it seriously boggles my mind. once HC and i were walking thru HK and they were beckoning us to their table.
"You want to try it?"
"Of course not! They can't tell you anything!"
"They can tell your future."
"Fine. I'll ask him for tomorrow's winning lottery number."
it seems that even highly educated people still believe in them (which supports my contention that education alone isn't the answer to such issues). i saw Ph.Ds in Thailand using them for new building ceremonies to keep evil spirits away and to promote good business.
this is one area of contention that is part of the reason why i have not agreed to have a kid yet. i staunchly refuse to abide by pagan beliefs, but i cannot control the family who would be inclined to take matters into their own hands. fortunately i don't have to work a regular job so i'm not gone all day like Andres is.
看完你的說明..我終於知道為什麼小baby要剪頭髮了.:p
She's still cute luckily. I have seen so many kids come out of this looking like potatoes.
Andres They do the same here in Thailand and for more or less the same beliefs. I remember when I went to see a Thai teachers baby and they had shaved her head as well. They had the "party" for the new arrival, it was priceless as there were girls dancing "Mor Lum" style on a stage they had set-up in their street. More Lum is pretty raunchy and I couldn't help but laugh at this happening.
MJ made me aware of your blog and I enjoy it a lot. I am looking forward to more time to read some more.
Brunty
david... thanks. yup, it's an uphill battle when it comes to arguing with the wife and mom. i might lose most of the time, but it doesn't mean i won't throw my two cents in there.
neil... that's interesting. it's the first i've heard of having to cut the baby's hair because the fortune teller said so. i know for the most part, babies here get their first haircut on the 24th day after birth as it symbolizes filial obedience and devotion. depending on the parents, some only snip a few strands off just for the sake of completing the custom which is what we did, but others shave the kid's head off since they have to do a "hairct" anyways.
mj... well, i believe in fortune tellers. in fact i'm a pretty religious and superstitious person; however where i differ from others who have the same believes is i don't let all that run my life. we need to make our own decisions in life and ultimately take responsibility for our lives. do something because you feel is the right thing to do, not because a "elder" or a fortune teller tells to do it even tho' you know is completely wrong and ridiculous. what really bugs me out of all this is that they didn't even ask or tell me. i would have actually gone along and agreed with shaving olivia's head. i ain't so caught up in the whole custom of shaving her head off as the hair will grow back, but the fact that they did it without asking me first... MY daughter! it's the moral and principal!
tina... 我以為你知道. 其實剪頭髮的意思是代表孝順。
johnny... hahahaha, thanks. i don't wanna comment about other kids' appearances. i'm planning on having at least another kid and tell you what... karma can be a bitch!
brunty... thanks! you know, it seems the hair cut custom is done throughout most of the southeast asian countries. a filipino friend of mine just told me they do the same thing too.
you know, it sounds a lot like us having strippers at weddings and funerals... never seen them at a kid's party tho'.
xpat... thanks and no thanks.
With or without hair, she's still adorable. I'm having baby pains just looking at her.
Mega Cute!!
