my sister's wedding

congratulations to my sister cindy and my now bro-in-law chi-yang
there are 4 of us (i'm the youngest but by far the "elder") in the family and cindy is my second oldest sister
my oldest sister is already married with 3 kids, while my older brother is still living the bachelor life
it's been a couple weeks since cindy got married and i hesitated to post anything about it because i was waiting for the photos from the wedding photographer to come out
well, the photos are ready for your viewing pleasure
photos of the wedding and reception can be found here... http://www.fotop.net/tinayann/20080106a

what else? more photos of olivia of course!
all photos taken tonight...

for those wondering, yes, olivia does have quite a bit of hair, but it's just all on the back of her head
in fact, it's pretty long and it comes down to her neck
check it out...

i guess olivia is kinda rocking a baby mullet these days
bathing olivia
first of all, all you r. kelly's and michael jackson's out there, stay away from this post
olivia loves to bath and play in the water...

she might not look too happy in these pics, but believe me she really enjoys bathing
she makes all these sounds and smiles when you put her in the tub
if you take her out too early, she gets angry and cries so you have to keep her in the water for a while longer
can't wait to take her swimming in the summer

olivia is 2 months old
olivia is 2 months old today!
she's now 5.5 kg (14.8 lbs) and 61 cm (24")
looking back, it feels like it has been a lot longer than 2 months
i guess it's because of the lack of sleep and the long days..... and believe me, the days have been really long
most nights she's wide awake, only going to sleep around the time the sun comes up which only gives me a couple hours sleep before i have to go to work
she does sleep during the night sometimes but even when she does, we have to wake up every 4 hours to feed her
yup, it's been a LONG 2 months
hey, i ain't complaining... i enjoy every second i spend with her!
here are a few photos taken last night...

this last one was taken last week...

shrimp fishing taiwanese style
so you live in a concrete jungle that lacks nature and outdoor activities and you feel like doing some fishing?
what do you do?
you go fishing in a swimming pool filled with shrimps of course!
not really a swimming pool, but it's constructed just like one. man-made pond is probably the better term
yang-wei, rich and ivan enjoying the fishing and some beer. yup, what's fishing without downing a few brewskis?!?!
catch of the day... thai prawns
once we were done, we cleaned up the catch and put a thick coat of salt on top...
and into the oven / grill it went

master chef ivan checking up on the fine cuisine
all done. dip it in some wasabi and oh so good! bubba would have been proud of us!

company year-end party

we had our company's annual year-end party (weiya) last sunday at a restaurant inside the miramar mall
just like every year-end party we've had in the past, there were cash prize draws with the top prize being nt$60,000 (roughly us$1,800) this year
the chinese say one has good fortune and luck after a child's birth so with olivia still being a newborn, i was very optimistic about my chances this year
my optimism turned into disappointment as i left the party without an extra cent to my name
shit
i guess there's always next year but it's kinda frustrating that i've said that 3 years in a row
yup, not a draw in 3 years
what can i say???
there's always next year

eye taiwan in a day
a photo of mine has been featured in a video by christiana for the wow! eye taiwan video contest
take it away christiana...The objective of my video is to promote the culture of Taiwan. I have used beautiful imageries to eye the country in one day, from day to night, incorporating shots of amazing architecture, the people, religion, customs, food, shops, transport, and other fantastic sights.

olivia's chinese name

most people out here will go to a fortune teller to get their baby's chinese name
the name is then calculated and given according to his/her date and time of birth
you don't have to if you don't want to
you can take the english name route and just give your baby whatever name you like
most people, especially the elders, will advise against it but some people are just not superstitious nor believe in that stuff so they name their own babies
we did go to a fortune teller to get olivia's chinese name
we were given 12 names to chose from and we decided on 尤宇琦
the phonetic translation is yu yu-qi (in which we'll use yu yu-chi for her passport and official documents)
the literal translation as follows:

in chinese, the family name (last name) is pronounced first followed by the given name (first name)
so for example, let's just pretend michael jackson was chinese, we would call him jackson michael out here
i've read about people asking why does yao ming's jersey say yao intead of ming and that's because yao is his last name
did that make sense?

things i missed during olivia's first month
during my recent business trip to china, not only did i miss christmas with olivia, but i also missed winter solstice festival (dongzhi festival), olivia's first haircut and her 1 month birthday on 12/26
i'm not too piqued about the winter solstice festival but i'm kinda upset about missing first haircut and her 1 month birthday
the first haircut is an event which happens on the 24th day of birth and it symbolizes filial obedience and devotion for one's parents
the 1 month birthday is also important to us chinese as it ends the mother's postpartum confinement ("the month") and since karen was doing her month at her mom's house, the end of the month meant olivia was coming back home
the 1 month birthday is also a big celebration and a gift (usually cake or sticky rice) is given to family and friends; and some even hold a big party to celebrate this event (no, we didn't)
with the new year upon us, here's to hoping i don't miss many more milestones in olivia's life
here are some photos taken and emailed to me by karen a few days before olivia's 1 month birthday while i was away
