in our recent trip to taichung, we stayed at the freshfield hot spring resort located on the mountainside overlooking taichung city. we got to our room in the afternoon and we had a great view of the city thanks to being on an upper floor plus the room was surrounded with huge windows. so, sure we had a great view of the city but we did not have a clear view as it was really hazy. it wasn't a really sunny day so i just figured it was the overcast weather outside. well, we wake up early the next morning and what do you know.....

we had a clear view of the city! (the windows are slightly tinted, so the photos are kinda misleading but it was really clear!)
however, it didn't last for long. as we approached noontime, there was suddenly something in the air.....
a thick layer of smog started to appear in the distance...
slowly hovering over the city and blurring the view. now i know why i could hardly see anything the day before. yuck!

That's Taichung for you! When I first arrived in Taiwan, I stayed with a friend in Taichung. I had been there for two weeks when, one morning, I woke up, looked out the window (this was in a 16th-floor apartment) and saw the mountains for the first time!
I live much closer to the mountains now (in Fengyuan), but there are still days when they can't be seen from my windows.
i was actually a bit suprised to see so much smog over taichung. i expect it in taipei and kaohsiung, but not so much in taichung; altho' i still like taichung a lot. i would definitely like to live there if given the opportunity.
