end of an era

flextronics metal tooling taiwan

photo taken yesterday morning of the entire staff on our last day of operations. as you can imagine, the mood was very somber and depressing. our department has been in existence for 10 years and some of us have been there the whole time since the beginning. nevertheless, all of us have been together for many years and we developed a very strong bond and comradery. definitely a family away from family. extremely sad to see it all end but as one door closes, others open so hopefully this is an opportunity for new beginnings.

trip to taichung

one of the benefits from the company that i work for is an annual personal travel reimbursement of nt$7,200 (appr. us$230). even tho' this week is the last for my business unit before we get shutdown for good, we are still eligible for this benefit as long as we submit all the proper paperwork and receipts before the closure. so, since i haven't applied for mine and not wanting to let this go to waste, we decided to go to taichung last week and stay at the freshfields hot springs resort.

a couple hours into the trip, my digital camera went haywire (note: don't let your toddler play with your electronics!) so didn't take as many photos as i would've liked. i did also have my dv with me, so i was able to take some videos.

when we arrived at the hotel, we decided to walk around the property a little bit before checking-in.....

after checking-in, we go to our room of course.....

after settling in and relaxing for a little while, we took a dip in the hot spring bath right in our room.....

dinner time.....

after dinner, we went to jingming 1st street. i really liked this pedestrians-only area. with its outdoors coffee shops, live music and artsy feel, it had a really good mood and atmosphere to it.....

the next day, we drove around taichung sightseeing various places including the matsu temple in dajia.....

here's the google maps location for freshfields hot spring resort.....

trip to yunlin

during the chinese new year holidays, we went to visit karen's grandpa (on mom's side) in yuanchang, yunlin. i love being outdoors, especially in the countryside so when i went there for the first time two years ago, i really loved it there and had a really good time. with a big entourage this time plus this being olivia's first time there and both my brothers in law's first visit in over 10 years, we were bound to have a good time and indeed we did.....

trip to yunlin
it had been cold and rainy in taipei, so the warm weather there was definitely a welcomed sight.

trip to yunlin
grandpa's neighbour, who had all sorts of animals in the yard.

trip to yunlin
olivia with grandpa (or in her case, it's great-grandpa!). he was so happy to see her since she's his first great-grandchild.

trip to yunlin
that's my father in law on the left with grandpa (his father in law) on the right. notice the clear color of the drinks. we were drinking some taiwanese moonshine made from rice that grandpa had stashed under some table in the corner. really good but strong stuff!

trip to yunlin
afer dinner and getting tipsy on the moonshine, we all sat in the courtyard conversating and drinking tea.

later on, my brother in law decided to go to the corner store and buy some fireworks. probably not the best idea considering we had quite a bit to drink.....

trip to yunlin
the most excited person to play with all the fireworks? my father in law! probably the alcohol coming into effect there.

trip to yunlin
just like a big kid.

trip to yunlin
that's my father in law with both my brothers in law trying to light up the big box of fireworks.....

video of that box of fireworks they lit up.

trip to yunlin
olivia joining in on the fun.

trip to yunlin
after everyone went to sleep, i sat there for a while enjoying the tranquil night.....

trip to yunlin
while downing a few beers.

trip to yunlin
next day, it was very sunny and warm with a light breeze, so we sat in the courtyard again chatting away the day while enjoying the great weather.

trip to yunlin
olivia really enjoyed the trip. just look at her hair!

just another evening in hukou

after finishing some errands this past saturday, we decided to go visit our good friends hui-chen and mj in hukou. we all met up at ah-dong's for some thai food and sang som, where we were also joined by michael "superstar" turton and jeff miller.

just another evening in hukou
olivia sitting in the backseat waiting in the car with me while karen bought some coffee from 7-eleven before we drove off to hukou.

just another evening in hukou
after killing two bottles at ah-dong's, we moved on to shiao-hui's for some more. here's our third bottle of the night.

just another evening in hukou
we got some thai fried pork.....

just another evening in hukou
which we dipped in "bootsy bbq sauce" and let tell ya, it was really good! this is a special family recipe that mj's friend back in the usa makes and hopes to market globally.

just another evening in hukou
later on, we were joined by ah-long and his sister (in the back), whom we thought was his girlfriend! oops!

so, it was just another wonderful night with great company, food and drinks. we hope to be back soon and with the weather getting warmer, we hope it's a rooftop bbq party!

and that's how the fight started

just got this in my email and thought it was pretty funny so i'd like to share with you all.....

When I got home last night, my wife demanded that I take her someplace expensive.
So, I took her to a gas station.
And that's how the fight started.....

********************

My wife and I are watching Who Wants To Be A Millionaire while we were in bed.
I turned to her and said, "Do you want to have sex?"
"No," she answered.
I then said, "Is that your final answer?"
She didn't even look at me this time, simply saying "Yes."
So I said, "Then I'd like to phone a friend."
And that's how the fight started.....

********************

After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for Social Security.
The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver's license to verify my age. I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home.
I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to go home and come back later.
The woman said, "Unbutton your shirt."
So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair.
She said, "That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me." And she processed my Social Security application.
When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office.
She said, "You should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten Disability too."
And that's how the fight started.....

********************

Saturday morning I got up early, quietly dressed, made my lunch, grabbed the dog, and slipped quietly into the garage.
I hooked up the boat up to the truck, and proceeded to back out into a torrential downpour.
The wind was blowing 50 mph, so I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad all day.
I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed.
I cuddled up to my wife's back, now with a different anticipation, and whispered, "The weather out there is terrible."
My loving wife of 10 years replied, "Can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that?"
And that's how the fight started.....

********************

My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion, and I kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby table.
My wife asked, "Do you know her?"
"Yes," I sighed, "she's my old girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up those many & years ago, and I hear she hasn't been sober since."
"My God!" says my wife, "Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?"
And that's how the fight started.....

********************

I rear-ended a car this morning.
So, there we were alongside the road and slowly the other driver got out of his car.
You know how sometimes you just get soooo stressed and Little things just seem funny?
Yeah, well I couldn't believe it.... He was a DWARF!!!
He stormed over to my car, looked up at me, and shouted, "I AM NOT HAPPY!!!"
So, I looked down at him and said, "Well, then, which one are you?"
And that's how the fight started.....

********************

I took my wife to a restaurant. The waiter, for some reason, took my order first.
"I'll have the strip steak, medium rare, please."
He said, "Aren't you worried about the mad cow?"
"Nah, she can order for herself."
And that's how the fight started.....

********************

A woman is standing nude, looking in the bedroom mirror.
She is not happy with what she sees and says to her husband, "I feel horrible; I look old, fat and ugly. I really need you to pay me a compliment."
The husband replies, "Your eyesight's darn near perfect."
And that's how the fight started.....

chuwei fishing port

with yesterday being the last day off for the chinese new year holidays before having to go back to work today, we decided to go pray at the chulinshan temple in linkou. unfortunately, it seemed like all of taiwan had the same idea as us because when we arrived, the line up of cars going into the temple parking lot was several blocks long expanding at least a couple km's.

seeing that sight, we gave up on that idea and instead decided to take a drive along the beach just down the mountain from linkou which led us to the chuwei fishing port in the township of dayuan, taoyuan county.

some photos taken with my cell phone.....
