olivia's 2nd degree burns - one year later

one year ago.....

now, about a year later after the accident.....

olivia's 2nd degree burns - one year later

i'd say she has healed pretty good and what a relief that is! in fact, most of the time we forget that that accident ever happened but when we do remember, i still feel like the worst father in the world.

during this past year, i've received many emails from parents whose kids also experienced second degrees burns asking how olivia is doing. all i can say is, everything situation is different but seek proper care and be persistent while staying positive and patient. kids are a lot more amazing and courageous than we think.

Looking at the pictures again made me cringe - thinking how I might feel if it happened to my daughter ... it must have been so tough for you and your wife. I'm glad it healed so well. Luckily at her age she can't comprehend the risks, so the only permanent scars will be inside of you.

There was really nothing you could have done, the situation was not inherently dangerous - just a freak accident. I guess every parent accumulates some memories like that... Just part of the burden which comes together with the joy of raising a beautiful young child.

Heartfelt best wishes

My daughter was burned about 2 months ago as well. She pulled a crock pot filled with green beans and water down on her arm. Her burns were second degree but in many places they were almost 3rd degree. I've JUST started researching what scars and things look like - I've been trying to remain faithful to God's healing promises and not distract myself - and Olivia picture is the first one to come up. I'm so thankful that you've posted this because in a moment of weakness and not trusting what He's promised me, he takes me to your blog and I see you're beautiful daughter, fully healed with no scars. Thank you so much for this post.

Hi Heather, glad to know that you found encouragement in my post and you should be encouraged to know that your daughter will be OK. As I said in the post, stay positive and patient. You too will soon forget that the accident ever happened! Best wishes to you and your family!

Thanks so much for this post, Andre. Like Heather, I'm a parent currently going through this. My son pulled a container of hot pancake syrup from the counter and his face and arm were burned pretty badly. All of this on Christmas morning. We are still holding fast to God's word, and the doctor's good report, but the curiosity around the healing process is tormenting. I've had dreams/nightmares, insomnia, slight OCD-like parenting behavior since the accident, but seeing your beautiful Olivia gorgeous and SMILING a year later calms my heart. If you don't mind me asking, how long did it take before the scars started to look better? The docs told us in a week he should be fine, but it's day 2 and I'm not seeing it. Thanks again for sharing...you don't know how much this helps!

Thanks Andre, like PJ and Heather my 2 yr old daughter also had a "superficial 2nd degree" burn on her cheek last week and im going thru the same emotions. Im glad to see the recovery in Olivia and it does give me some relief and hope, cos even though plastic surgeon says it will heal i am still in doubt.

It also gives me some perspective as to the way my dad must feel as she was in his care when it happened. I am still extremely angry when i think about it although i know she's the apple of his eye as well.
